Lewis and Clark Expedition Enter sthe Great Plains (1804)

In this video segment, the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) on the Missouri River has passed beneath the bluffs of Leavenworth, Kansas during the extremely hot days of early July.  The captains and recruits are enthralled by the vast prairie lands that have come into view and the wildlife living there.  They celebrate their first 4th of July west of the Mississippi with gun salutes, but first have to administer lashes on a man who pilfered a whiskey barrel while on guard duty.  Whiskey was passed around on the 4th anyway. The Corps of Discovery is now entering the Great Plains, or the Great Desert as it was once called.  Soon it will be approaching the Platte River in the Nebraska Territory. (HD, 18 mins.). Remember: pictures sometimes are worth a 1000 words.
