Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark finally, in early August 1804, contacted Otoe and Missouri Indian chiefs north of the Platte River and orchestrated a council of peace and understanding. Lewis delivered the first lecture (speech), introducing the existence of a new Great Father (Jefferson) in the east and suggesting that good behavior would result in benevolent fur trade and fair dealings with the red children living along the Missouri River.
